Pheasants - 3, Cresaps - 0.
It's pretty hard to tell what this is, but the
blaze orange vest is Talmage halfway up a cedar tree in an (eventually
successful) attempt to get an otherwise very smart pheasant rooster to take
wing. Which it eventually did, right over the dogs, preventing my shot and
postponing his demise. (Well, possibly. I'm not such a great wing shot with a
shotgun.)
We know his demise was merely postponed, as by the
time we got to where he came to land, it looked like the bald eagle we had seen
earlier had found him and just left some feathers.
But otherwise Tal and Cole got to
walk five miles in the snow, three hours in 6 degree weather, chasing a couple
of very enthusiastic bird dogs around. We didn't end up with any birds in the
hand (they all stayed in the bush to become raptor dinner) but we had a blast
and Tal and Cole loved the whole experience.--Clint
