Zootastic at the Library

What a fun event for the boys. This parrot will live 72 years.
A ferret
A snake with 7 different patterns on it's skin.
A wig, no a guinea pig!
Chinchilla. The boys said it's fur was sooo soft and they want to have one.
Sugar glider. The cutest of all. I loved this old Sprague Library. Do you love old buildings, too? They make me feel so nostalgic and happy.

The Living Planet Aquarium

"Ah! The planet's alive!" the boys scream. What a weird name for an aquarium. But, in typical Utah fashion, it was incredibly well-done. I really liked the electric eel tank with the light-up display showing the level of voltage in the tank. Then there were two metal contact points and if you touched both of them, you got quite a zap! Talk about interactive! I also like the fish that crawled up out of the water. For some reason I thought that was a theoretical link in the evolutionary chain, not a living specimen! They also had a really neat wing of fish that were only in Utah and a great education center about the Salt Lake wetlands. Did you know that 80% of all the animals in Utah live in wetlands and that 60% of the wetlands are on the shores of the Great Salt Lake? Makes me a little less critical of the holdup on that Legacy Highway over the wetlands. Thanks Cara, Ally and Tyson for taking us there!

Grover Trip 3 - Donkey Reservoir

The first real catch of the season! Clint is pretty impressive. He went to Cabella's, listened carefully to the fish guy, bought the right lures and whamo! We caught three fish. If you want to be successful at a venture, he's a pretty good guy to hang out with.
The drive up to Donkey Resevoir was an absolute blast. The ride begins in Teasdale and winds up on top of Boulder Moutain. In many places the road was quite steep and bouldery. But Clint didn't spend months tweeking the 4-wheel setup for nothing. Appa crawled up and over everything without a hitch. That's one way to get a lake to yourself!
Tal catches a fish! Or at least his pole did. Now that I've witnessed the first catch, I'm looking forward to days at home, alone, while the men go out fishing! There's got to be some bennys to having all boys, don't you think?

Scouting Strawberry Reservoir

"My Dad and I went fishing at Strawberry Reservoir and all I got was this crawdad."
Dad and Jack went up to Strawberry one afternoon to scope out the campsite we were going to reserve and try a little fishing.

Camping in the Uintas

This was our first time camping with the boys. Clint was not interested in camping in some of the other muggy places we've lived. Plus he did too much camping in Iraq. Now we're in Utah--bring on the outdoors!--has been the theme. We four-wheeled it up to a campsite on the shores of Buckeye Lake just as it was getting dark. We set up camp and the boys gathered firewood while we made our chili dinner. But with the long, wet spring we had, it was no surprise that the firewood was wet (we had to brush the snow off some of it!) and made for a smokey fire, that gave out little heat. The boys we're exhausted and freezing after dinner. Clint boiled some water on the stove and filled up water bottles to put in the bottom of their sleeping bags and they were asleep in about two minutes. The next morning we drove up to Mirror Lake and beyond and looked at future possibilities. Never did go fishing, but maybe next time.

Grover Trip 2--Peekaboo and Spooky Slot Canyons

This trip to Grover was for the Hale Reunion, which always has to feature an epic hike. This fit the bill. The extra young and extra old had to have a boost up to get into Peekaboo slot canyon.

Aunt Karen--always glamorous.

A tight squeeze, even for the smallest hiker.

I absolutely depended on Hudson and Gabriel Mckay to help keep track of my boys. In the canyons you could only see the person immediately in front of you and behind you. The other McKay boys were busy helping my sisters with their kids. You can never have too many strapping Mckay boys around.

Miss Evelyn

How wide was the canyon? As wide as Rosie's hips. The canyon felt like a natural playground for the kids, although, they may not have understood the point of the exercise. At this point Rosalie asked Edith, "When are we going to get there?"

Jenny rescued a bird that fell into the canyon.

We hung out in this sliver of shade for 30 minutes before taking on the open desert for the 45 minute hike out. By this time we were mostly out of water, though we brought a ton. It was a fantastic hike and no one died, so it was a success!

Hale's Angels in the Huntsville 4th Parade

My Mom and Dad decided it was time we participated in the Parade, so we made this Nathan Hale float, followed by a trailer of Phil and Barbara Hale descendants. Appa led the way.
Jack made dramatic poses.
Lovely, tiny Grandma Barbara Hale.
Sam regrets he has but one life to give. Caleb is happy to take it, but a bit ashamed, thus the bag on the head.
Emmerson is thrilled with the whole affair.
It was fun throwing taffy at the bystanders.
After the parade Great Aunt Karen shows Trace some goats which live next door to Wendy and Chad Mckay's home.

Cabella's

Clint once said that he'd seen the portals of Hell--a fabric store. I don't feel that strongly about Cabella's, but it certainly has more allure to the males in the family. Here the boys are playing with pop guns.

Hike to Dog Lake

My men, appropriately equipped.
Blue bells--my favorite. There seemed to be acres of these! The wet winter brought many good things.
This trail is the sweetest mountain bike ride! We went a month later with Mike Pulsipher and had a blast! Up until the last 45 seconds when I botched the last hair-pin turn--a five bruiser--ugly! I still want to go back!
We turned around after an hour uphill. We figured that was accomplishment enough for Trace. Then we came back down and had a chili, cheese and chips dinner in the parking lot. Everything tastes delicious after a hike!

Rimington Family

What a treat to be able to spend a few hours with the Rimingtons who we knew in San Diego.
Tiffany watched the boys for me every Friday when Clint was deployed. And she gives the best hair cuts in the world. Clint and I really look up to Tiffany and Paul. Some of the world's best people.

Donut Falls

Snow still on the ground in late June.
